The Slovenian and Austrian national railway companies are looking for ways to strike a strategic partnership in order to expand rail freight transport. The partnership, which would also cover Hungary, Italy, and SE Europe, would aim to improve services for clients and partners from various sectors, Slovenske Zeleznice said in a press release.

The Slovenian rail operator also said that a letter of intent to that effect was signed with OEBB Austrian Railways. The partnership would reduce transport time and boost the use of traffic infrastructure, such as railway networks, train stations, and terminals. A detailed analysis of the opportunities will be carried out in the first half of the year in collaboration with relevant partners, national authorities, and EU institutions.

The partnership between the two railway operators is planned to be launched in 2017. In the strategy until 2020, Slovenske Zeleznice is planning to enter foreign markets. Its boss Dusan Mes has recently said that they are planning to enter the Balkans, Hungary, north Italy, and Austria as part of a strategic partnership.
